Blackwell in conversation with 榴莲视频 American Fellowship alumna Tamika Nunley, Ph.D., as they discuss her recent book, “The Demands of Justice: Enslaved Women, Capital Crime, and Clemency in Early Virginia,” 1662-1865. This book examines clemency in legal cases that involve enslaved women accused of capital crime in early Virginia. In these legal encounters, we not only see a system that worked to define and affirm a commitment to legal paternalism that upheld the rule of law, but decades of responses made by the countless enslaved women accused of capital offenses. “The Demands of Justice” examines how these responses constituted the makings of an intellectual history of enslaved women鈥檚 articulations of justice.

Dr. Karen Cook Bell is Associate Professor of History and the Wilson H. Elkins Endowed Professor at Bowie State University. Her areas of specialization include slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and women鈥檚 history. Running from Bondage was a finalist for the Pauli Murray Book Prize for Best Book in African American Intellectual History. It tells the compelling stories of enslaved women, who comprised one-third of all runaways, and the ways in which they fled or attempted to flee bondage during and after the Revolutionary War. Dr. Karen Cook Bell鈥檚 enlightening and original contribution to the study of slave resistance in eighteenth-century America explores the individual and collective lives of these women and girls of diverse circumstances, while also providing details about what led them to escape.
